You will be paid fortnightly, every second Wednesday, by electronic funds transfer to your nominated financial institution. Each pay includes payment up to and including the Sunday of that pay week.

Your pay advice is available electronically via MyHR Self Service and is also delivered via email. Your pay advice includes:

  • your employee number and classification
  • applicable allowances
  • gross and net salary for the fortnight
  • deductions, including income tax and superannuation contributions
  • leave entitlements.

You can change your bank details yourself at any time or check the information held about you using MyHR Self Service. You can access MyHR Self Service, training and support material by logging in to OnePortal using your network user ID and password, and selecting the relevant quick link.

Salary

Your salary is calculated according to the classification of your role, the basis of your employment and the length of time you have been employed. All DoE positions are assigned a classification based on the type of work and level of responsibility.

Most job classifications fall into 1 of the following salary streams:

  • administrative
  • professional
  • technical
  • operational
  • teaching
  • nursing.

Usually, starting salaries are at the lowest level for the classification; however, the department may recognise prior teaching or industry experience to determine the salary for temporary or permanent employees.

Salary packaging

Salary packaging is available to you. It allows some of your salary to be taken as benefits before tax, such as contributions to superannuation or leasing a car. Using salary packaging in these ways lowers your taxable income and may potentially increase your after-tax income.

For more information about salary packaging, contact either of the administrators of the scheme:

Superannuation

Queensland Government employees receive higher employer superannuation contributions than the Commonwealth's minimum guarantee rate.

The Queensland Government's superannuation contribution is 12.75% for employees under 75 years old.

These contribution rates apply to your salary, which is based on ordinary time earnings and includes all forms of paid leave including paid parental leave. It also includes any ordinary time allowances, such as shift allowances and weekend penalties.

Superannuation contributions are paid each pay period into your superannuation fund account.

If you are aged 75 years or older, you will only receive the superannuation guarantee rate of ordinary time earnings into your superannuation account.

From July 2017, Queensland public sector employees will be able to choose the fund to which they can have their superannuation contributions paid, this is known as choice of fund.

QSuper will remain the Queensland Government's default fund for our employees, which means that your superannuation contributions will continue to be made to QSuper if you don't choose another fund.

Visit the superannuation page on the Queensland Government website for further information.

Leave entitlements

All temporary and permanent employees are entitled to paid leave for various reasons such as illness, recreation, emergency or compassionate circumstances, natural disasters, etc.

Entitlements vary according to the employee's position and location.

Conditions of employment

Your conditions of employment will vary depending on your position (teacher, public servant, teacher aide, etc.) and the category of your employment (full-time/part-time, casual/temporary/permanent).

The conditions of employment for all cohorts of employees are contained in the relevant industrial awards and agreements.

The award for your position sets out the basic conditions under which you work. Certified agreements, negotiated between the department and relevant unions, will vary some conditions of employment.
