The department is delivering flood resilient infrastructure over 5 years where flooding events have the potential to cause significant disruption. Up to $88.4 million was allocated in the 2023–24 State Budget toward the Flood Resilience Program.
Through the department's Flood Resilience Program, we are working closely with 7 schools that were significantly impacted during the February 2022 South East Queensland severe rainfall and flooding event.
The aim of the program is to create stronger, safer and overall, better disaster resilient schools through improved preparation, flood resilient materials and design.
The 7 schools participating in the program are: Milton State School, One Mile State School, Two Mile State School, Rocklea State School, St Helens State School, Aviation High and Milpera State High School. All 7 schools are susceptible to different types of floods.
The Flood Resilience Program is being rolled out in stages, enabling the department to focus on each school. Activities at each school include undertaking important site investigations, risk and options analysis, consultation with local government and schools, concept master planning, and establishing non-infrastructure mitigation measures that compliment resilient infrastructure design.
The program aligns with the department's Equity and Excellence in action—infrastructure for learning plan—specifically priority action 'Building disaster resilience in school infrastructure'.
