A new 3-storey flood resilient learning centre is being planned for Milton State School as the next stage in the school's master plan to mitigate future flood damage.

Milton State School is 1 of 7 schools that are part of the department's Flood Resilience Program, which aims to create stronger, safer and more resilient schools.

A flood mitigation project was completed in 2021, which included construction of a 3-storey Junior Learning Centre (Block CC), featuring high level walkways for flood emergency evacuation and relocation of core site infrastructure above known flood levels.

The school experienced significant flooding in the 2022 flood event. The Junior Learning Centre was successful in its mitigation intents, meaning less damage to infrastructure, and students were able to return to learning quicker.

The design of the new building will complement the Junior Learning Centre and replace Block E and the Music building, providing the school with an upgraded flood resilient facility.

The proposed development will include:

  • a new 3-storey flood resilient learning building, which provides
    • a new multi-purpose court
    • music space
    • outdoor learning space
    • 3 general learning areas
    • level 2 will have capacity for 4 future general learning areas
  • resilient refurbishment to Block B
    • uniform shop
    • conference room
    • undercover play area.

The department consulted the community about the new project in September 2024. Further community consultation is scheduled for early 2025.

This investment is being made by the Queensland Government using efficiencies realised under the joint Commonwealth and State government funding—Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
