A public private partnership (PPP) is a collaboration between the public and private sectors that uses the skills of each sector to deliver infrastructure in a timely and efficient way and provides value for money for the state.

The private sector provides vital services, such as construction, maintenance and design to the government for a fixed period. In return, the government pays a monthly service fee to the vendor.

PPPs provide an effective mechanism for ensuring that project risks are allocated to the party, either the private or public sector, best able to manage those risks. A PPP can thereby assist the government to contain costs and help to ensure that infrastructure continues to serve its purpose effectively throughout its planned life. The facilities are to be maintained to agreed performance standards governed by contractual arrangements.

The Department of Education manages 2 PPP contracts on behalf of the Queensland Government, which have delivered a total of 17 schools.
